For those who love to celebrate national holidays, Boston is the place to be. Whether it’s Christmas or July 4th, this New England hub of festivities has something for everyone. You can watch fireworks over Boston Harbor or in town over parks like Boston Common, or head to one of the many events taking place. To help you plan how to ring in 2014, here’s a guide to Boston for New Year’s Eve.

If you just want to chill out in a swanky club or upscale lounge, you have loads of options. On Tremont Street, fashionable spots like Guilt, Royale, and Underbar have $45 general admission tickets that include champagne toasts at midnight, top-notch DJs, and party favors. Head to Underbar if you like electronic dance music, Guilt if you like things posh, and Royale if you want to see a killer dance floor layout. Get tickets well before the big day—you can upgrade to VIP for extra perks like priority admission and reserved seating (not a bad idea). These venues are great for experiencing Boston’s nightlife scene.

For those who like getting dressed up, The Greatest Bar (Friend Street) is throwing a 50 Shades of Grey event on all four floors (9pm–5am)—dress like your favorite character, and get your tickets as early as you can; note prices go up the closer NYE gets. This event is sure to be a top Boston experience this holiday.

You could also join the New Year’s Eve “Crawl ‘Til the Ball Falls” Bar Crawl, which runs from 5pm to 2am (so, past when the ball falls, actually), with registration at Stadium Sports Bar Faneuil Hall. The crawl traverses down and around the lively State Street. For $10, You’ll get a wristband, cup, and the most important item of your night: a map!
